MALCOLM FREEMAN

Painter

Artist Bio:

Malcolm is an artist whose work is shaped by formal training, international experience, and a strong connection to place. After completing a Bachelor and Master of Fine Art at Staffordshire University in the mid-1990s, he lived in Barcelona, then spent three years in Osaka and Tokyo. These experiences broadened his visual language and continue to influence the atmosphere and sensitivity of his paintings.

He moved to New Zealand over 20 years ago and is now based in Warkworth, where he has lived for the past four years, drawing inspiration for his paintings from the New Zealand landscape, native flora, local history, and familiar landmarks. As his two children grew older, he returned to painting with renewed focus, working across watercolour, acrylic, and oil paint.

His figurative landscapes combine traditional influences with a contemporary eye, celebrating the character of place through rich surfaces, fresh compositions, and careful observation. Malcolm’s paintings invite viewers to look again at the natural details, buildings, and histories that shape the environments around them.
