The Mahurangi Artist Network is proud to introduce our newest venture: the Mahurangi Network Gallery - a curated space dedicated to showcasing the finest work of our region's most talented artisans.

Located in a character-filled industrial space at the Matakana Workshops, this new gallery brings together a rotating selection of high-quality art, craft and design.  From ceramics and sculpture to painting, jewellery, woodwork and textiles, every piece tells a local story and reflects the diverse creativity of the Mahurangi region and our Network artists.

This six-month pilot project, co-ordinated and run by Network members, is a bold step forward in celebrating and supporting local art from our emerging and professional Network artists.  The gallery not only offers a central hub for visitors and locals to experience the best of Mahurangi artisanry, but also serves as a platform for artists to connect with new audiences in a dynamic and ever-changing environment.

Whether you're a long-time support of our Network's annual art trail or a first time visitor to the Gallery, we invite you to stop by, be inspired, and take home something truly unique.

Explore Our Latest Showcase Curation Round #4

New Season, New Works

Since opening in December 2025, the Mahurangi Network Gallery in Matakana’s Workshops precinct has become a vibrant showcase for the creative diversity of the Mahurangi Artist Network. Run by the Network and supported by our friendly team of volunteers, the gallery offers visitors the chance to experience an ever-changing collection of original artwork in the heart of Matakana.

The gallery reflects the wide range of art practices within the Network, with paintings, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, photography, resin art, textiles, glass and prints all represented. While around 30 artists from our current 65 members are exhibiting in this fourth curation round, careful thought goes into each exhibition so the works sit harmoniously together while still celebrating the individuality of each artist.

Since opening, we have been delighted by the warm feedback from visitors, many commenting on both the quality and diversity of the work, as well as the thoughtful curation of the space. To keep the gallery fresh and engaging, the exhibition is re-curated every six to eight weeks, with artists regularly introducing new work and new artists joining each rotation.

This latest curation round brings together an exciting mix of colour, texture and form. Ceramics continue to be a strong feature throughout the gallery, from functional bowls and vessels by Brendan Adams, Julian Austin and Jim Howard, to the intricate and delicate works of Blair Fraser and the striking indoor and outdoor sculptures of Jill Howard.

Florals and botanical themes remain a favourite, explored through dynamic still life painting, colour-saturated resin work and contemporary chinoiserie-inspired pieces by Pauline Gough, Janette Cervin, Ann Orman and Andrea Ventling.

Elsewhere in the gallery, moody textile and metallic works by Alysn Midgelow-Marsden sit beautifully alongside Burnt Offering by Karena de Pont and the imaginative up-cycled creations of Mark Lewington.

One striking blue-toned wall pays tribute to the ocean, bringing together coastal-inspired works by Sonia Fraser, Maureen Roke, Jillian Dingle, Rhana Panhuis, Sally Thrush and Glenda Hopkins, complemented by sculptural works from Derek Ventling, Juliana Austen, Liz Sharek and Brendan Adams.

And of course, there is always room for a joyful burst of colour, something beautifully delivered through the ceramic flowers of Viv Patterson, the energetic street-art inspired works of Noila Souza and the expressive floral portraiture of Sioux Anich.

As we move into the quieter winter season, the gallery has now adopted new winter opening hours: Thursday to Sunday, 11am–3pm. Whether you are a regular visitor or discovering us for the first time, we invite you to drop in, explore the latest curation and enjoy a conversation with our welcoming volunteer team.
