Tabea’s creative journey began in childhood, exploring a variety of crafts and illustration techniques using graphite, coloured pencil, watercolour, and ink. Drawn to pottery for its unique union of the four elements — earth, water, air, and fire — she began wheel-throwing in early 2023.

Working from her studio in Kaipara Flats, Tabea creates functional ceramics characterised by clean, simple forms. The surface of each piece becomes a dedicated space for artistic exploration. Using a variety of carving techniques she creates tactile surfaces that add physical depth and interest to her pieces. Her colourful glazes range from soft hues of blue and turquoise to pinks and purples, bringing a gentle vibrancy to each form.

Other pieces feature striking sgraffito illustrations, created by carving through dark slip to reveal the white clay underneath. This technique yields bold, graphic designs defined by line, texture, and contrast. Inspired by her close connection to the natural world, her intricate motifs reflect the beauty and detail of the flora and fauna around her. Drawn to the mindful, hands-on nature of her practice, Tabea continues to explore the possibilities of carving, colour, and design in her work.
