Artist Bio:
Dr Cathie Koa Dunsford (Cath Koa) is an award winning artist with over 50 years of practice. Her work has been exhibited in New Zealand and overseas with solo and joint exhibitions from Koa Ahau, I Am at Dunedin City Art Gallery to A Fine Line Gallery in Matakana, including commissioned art on book covers and as illustrations in New Zealand and globally from Spinifex Press Australia to Global Dialogues Press, Hamburg and Stromness. Cath has been a finalist in two National Ceramic Awards, judged by Peter Lange for Art by the Sea, Auckland. In 1994, Australia Post commissioned Cath to design a poster for an International Book Fair in Melbourne where Booker Award Winner, Keri Hulme, launched Cath's first Cowrie eco-novel. Since then, there are 26 books in print and publication globally featuring Cath's writing and art. The Auckland Heritage Trust invited Dr Dunsford to submit a limited edition woodcuts for an auction for the conservation of books and prints alongside works by Dick Frizzel, Nigel Brown, Witi Ihimaera and Keri Hulme. Starfish Enterprises has been selling her art internationally for the past four decades.
The University of Osnabrueck Press chose her art for the cover of Survivors: Uberlebende. Her woodcuts were selected for the hardback edition of the Cowrie novels in German translation by highly respected literary publisher Rogner and Bernhard, Hamburg. Spinifex Press Australia chose woodcuts by Cath for covers and illustrations of books exhibited and sold at the International Frankfurt, Leipzig and Istanbul Book Fairs. Cath's woodcuts and paintings were exhibited at Sing Aotearoa Conferences. Global Dialogues Press commissioned art for covers, illustrations of their international books for two decades. Cathie Koa Dunsford draws from her rich cultural heritage for her creativity and believes that art has the potential to heal the planet.
