Being an artist is often a solitary pursuit. Many of us know the long, quiet hours spent in the studio, deep in thought and process. While this can be deeply fulfilling, it can also feel isolating. That’s where the Mahurangi Artist Network (MAN) comes in – a vibrant, supportive collective of local artists who understand that creativity thrives in community.

Membership runs from 1st April to 31st March each year, and while you can join anytime, the best time to sign up is now. Early membership gives you a front-row seat to all the opportunities MAN has to offer, especially the regular social “Meet Ups” hosted at members' open studios. These gatherings are casual, welcoming, and a great way to meet fellow creatives, share ideas, and make lasting friendships.

“I am really pleased that I made the decision to apply for membership of MAN,” shares Lou Dews, a new member. “Being an artist can feel isolating as we toil alone at our chosen craft. Membership of a likeminded group of people is stimulating and inclusive.”

Fee Blankley, also recently joined, echoes this sentiment: “Being around other artists and exploring other perspectives provides a wonderful opportunity to share, be inspired and deepen the connection we have with the creative process. I’m looking forward to hearing and seeing more from other artists in the group.”

Whether you're just starting out or have been painting for decades, the Mahurangi Artist Network is a space to grow. Pauline Gough, who joined in 2020, recalls: “The very first art trail coincided with my newly built studio and was a great way to get started in this area.”

The highlight of the MAN calendar is the Mahurangi Artist Studio Trail (MAST2026), which will run for 10 days starting at the end of January 2026. Registration for the trail closes mid-September, but don't wait until then to join – signing up now ensures you receive the full benefits of support, exposure, encouragement, and networking in the lead-up.

Julz Beaumont encourages others to take the leap: “When I joined, I wasn't sure if it was right for me but instantly I made new friends and with the support from the group my art practice has flourished. Thank you so much. If anyone is thinking about joining, I would say just do it!!”

Nicola Bedford is equally enthusiastic: “I’m really excited to be a new member of the Mahurangi Artist Network. Finally, I am part of a local co-op of artists, not just a lone creator.”

At the heart of MAN is a spirit of generosity and shared growth. “I have learned so much from the other members of MAN and have greatly benefited from their guidance and experience,” says Sharlene Hasler. “Having a group of friends who have similar interests and goals is encouraging. Seeing everyone’s different viewpoints reflected in their artwork is very inspiring to me.”
